Healthy Lifestyle

It is very easy to take good health for granted and many of us do so when we are feeling fit and well. However, like any other machine, our bodies need to be taken care of if they are to last us a long time, and a sensible lifestyle can help achieve this.

Eating the right sort of food is one thing we can do to maintain the right balance of nutrients we need to help avoid heart disease and cancer, and to help the body to repair itself following accidents or illness.

Fresh fruit and vegetables reduce the risk of strokes and diabetes (steam or stir-fry vegetables to preserve essential vitamins), the protein in meat, fish and pulses such as lentils and beans help growth, carbohydrates like bread, potatoes and pasta give us energy and fibre helps food to pass through the digestive system efficiently. Obesity carries many risks such as diabetes, cancer and heart disease, but can be avoided by eating properly.

Exercise is another important way of keeping ourselves healthy. Walking, playing sport, cycling or aerobic exercises all help to work off any of the surplus calories which can turn into fat, as well as keeping our lungs, hearts and muscles functioning efficiently.

A healthy lifestyle does not have to be boring or difficult to maintain, and life is much more enjoyable when you feel good.

Remember… Burgers, chips, crisps and sweets are ok in moderation, but they provide very little in the way of nutrition so should only be eaten occasionally.
