Voluntary Work

Within a climate of active citizenship, youth participation and lifelong learning, many people, young and old are seeking opportunities to volunteer. For many people it becomes not just a one-off event but also a life long experience.

You won't get paid for voluntary work, although some organisations do pay expenses, for example living expenses if you are living away from home.

What are the benefits of doing voluntary work?

Volunteering could help you find out about a particular area of work, e.g. care/social work, environmental/conservation work.

You could be introduced to new people and new situations whilst helping your local community e.g. helping to run a local youth organisation.

You could develop your self confidence, communication, career building and social skills and learn how to work effectively in team situations.

You may be able to pursue new interests. All new experiences will enhance your CV when applying for a place at college, university or in employment.

In addition, some careers/courses ask for relevant work experience and volunteering is one way of gaining that experience.

How can I find out more?

Your local Connexions Centre will have books, leaflets, videos, etc which you can refer to. You might also obtain volunteering opportunities within your school, youth group or church.

If you are seeking totally new experiences in new environments there are volunteer centres within Cumbria which match prospective volunteers with opportunities:

Barrow-in-Furness 01229 823144
Carlisle 01228 512513
Kendal 01539 725005
Penrith 01768 866966
Maryport 01900 819191

There are also opportunities within the service section of The Duke of Edinburgh's Award, for you to become involved in your community. Contact The Education Department, Lifelong Learning Unit on 01228 606937.

Interested in volunteering? What next?

If you are thinking of volunteering, ask yourself the following questions:

  • Why am I interested in volunteering?
  • What sort of voluntary work am I interested in?
  • How much time can I offer without affecting schoolwork and other commitments?
  • What skills can I offer?
  • What skills would I like to develop through volunteer work?

Your parents/guardians may want to check out:

  • That prospective volunteers are adequately covered by insurance.
  • That you are not put in danger or at risk through volunteering.
  • That suitable training, support and supervision is offered.

Have a look on the Community Services Volunteers website at the bottom of this page.

Please Note

It is possible to undertake voluntary work while getting benefits. You should contact your local Job Centre/Benefits Agency to find out what restrictions they may have, for example, how many hours a week you can work.
