Letter Writing

Speculative Letters

It is well worth contacting employers 'on the off-chance' sending them your CV and a covering letter even though they aren't currently advertising for staff. Sending speculative letters means that an employer has information about you and the kind of work that you are interested in, and may consider you if a suitable opportunity arises.

  • Decide which employers you want to contact.
  • Find out the name of the relevant person you need to contact so that you are sending a personally addressed letter.
  • The letter should inform the employer of the type of work you are looking for, highlight your skills and experience and asking them to contact you when a suitable vacancy arises.
  • Include a CV to inform the employer of your skills, qualifications and experience. Include a stamped self-addressed envelope.
  • Follow up your letter with a phone call to make personal contact.
  • Application Letters

One of the ways employers asks you to apply for a job is by sending a letter of application. This is your chance to convince them that you are the best person for the job.

REMEMBER

If the advert asks you to 'write for further details' or 'write for an application form', then do just that. Make your letter short, clear and neat - do not tell your life story.

If the advert asks for you to 'apply in writing', you should write a clear and neat letter giving full details about yourself and your reasons for applying for the job.

Covering Letters

A CV requires a good covering letter to accompany it, which should

  • Be brief but relevant.
  • Be well written and presented.
  • Include new information if particularly relevant to the vacancy.
  • Highlight, not repeat, relevant sections of your CV.
