Your Rights at Work

Can I get a job?

No-one under 13 can legally be employed. There are also restrictions on the hours which you can work and the places in which you can work. See Working Whilst at School for more details.

What about my safety at work?

  • Your employer has a responsibility to take care of your health, safety and welfare whilst you are at work. You can help ensure you stay safe by:
  • Checking that you are properly trained for the job you are doing
  • Making sure you wear suitable protective clothing
  • Asking questions if you're not sure what to do
  • Speaking to an adult if anyone at work makes you feel uncomfortable or anxious by what they say or do

What if I am sacked?

If you have been working full time for more than 4 weeks you should be given at least 1 weeks notice, unless you have done something wrong like stealing, always being late, being rude etc. If you feel you have been sacked without a good reason seek advice from your union or advice agency.

Do I have to go on a training scheme or take a job?

No, but most 16 - 17 year olds cannot claim income support if they refuse to accept a job or take a place on a Youth Training Scheme, unless they can prove exceptional hardship.
