What are NVQs

National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) are a work based training route to a nationally recognised qualification.

To gain an NVQ trainees have to provide evidence that they have the skills, knowledge and understanding needed to do the job.

Each NVQ is made up of a number of units that are assessed and certified separately, so the trainee builds up a qualification over a period of time.

Assessment can be carried out in the workplace or through a local training centre.

The trainee can complete an NVQ at his/her pace and there are no examinations and no grades awarded - they are either competent or not.

NVQs are accredited through a national framework as detailed below and are related to employers' needs.

Level 1

Basic level showing they have the competence to carry out a range of routine work activities.

Level 2

Shows competence in a broader range of work activities involving some teamwork and decision making.

Level 3

Shows competence in a broad range and more complex work activities. This level also involves taking responsibility for their own work and may involve some supervisory work.

Level 4

Shows competence in complex, technical, specialist and professional work activities. Will possibly involve design, planning and problem-solving tasks and will need to show personal accountability, supervision or management.

Level 5

Shows competence in a significant range of principals and techniques. Personal responsibility, accountability in design, analysis and diagnosis, planning and problem-solving will be involved. Extensive knowledge and understanding will be required with capability in management and supervision in executive and some professional fields.
