Year Out Gap Year

A gap year or taking a year out, is when people decide to gain other experiences before continuing their education or going into employment. Some people may use it as time out before entering higher education. Others may have completed their educational course and want to take some time out before going into employment.

Why do it?

Taking a gap year can bring many benefits. Most universities admissions tutors take a positive view toward gap years providing the time is used constructively with structured and well thought out plans.

What are the benefits?

  • Opportunity to gain in confidence and find out about yourself.
  • Possibility of trying out a work area, e.g. a year in Industry.
  • Developing life and work related skills.
  • Time and experience to consider your future plans.
  • Broaden your knowledge and experience of other cultures.

How can I use my time?

Employment
To help you identify possible career/course choices or to experience work related to your degree studies. You could also use this time to save money for your course.

Travelling
to help develop problem-solving skills, broaden your experience, improve language skills, and develop your independence and self-reliance.

Voluntary work
Giving your time to help people and organisations in different settings.

How can I find out more?

There is a wide range of resources available about taking a year out; your school, college or public library may have relevant information. Your local Connexions Centre will have books, leaflets, videos and CD Roms etc. that you can refer to.

Defered Entry

Many universities will allow you to apply for a course but defer your entry for a year. The advantage of this is that you can enjoy you gap year knowing that your university place is sorted out and secure.
