Work Permits

If your child is in compulsory education, before he or she starts work they will need a work permit. An application form can be obtained from school, the local Education Welfare Officer or the employer may already have one.

Could the permit be removed?

Yes - If the Local Education Authority believe that your child is being unlawfully employed or that their health, welfare or school attendance is suffering or likely to suffer as a result.

How long does a permit Last?

A work permit lasts for a long as the job does. However, if your child stops working, changes jobs or the hours of working change, they need to inform the Education Welfare Service.

Remember

A work permit is required if your child is paid to work or not. However, if they are doing work arranged by school a work permit is not needed.
