National Citizen Service for 16 year olds is heading to Cumbria

Teenagers across the country are being given the opportunity to take part in an exciting new pilot that will include Cumbria’s young people.

Young people will be invited to take part in a 6-8 week summer programme, which will include residential courses, under plans for a voluntary National Citizen Service (NCS).

In a joint initiative between Connexions Cumbria and The Outward Bound Trust, a bid to run a NCS pilot, submitted to The Department of Education and the Office for Civil Society has been successful. Our NCS pilot will bring together year 11 leavers from different backgrounds and locations to become community volunteers and contribute to the vision for a Big Society.

The delivery of NCS in Cumbria will explore how the national specification can be applied in a rural area with a sparse population and poor transport connectivity between its urban areas.

The following three core principles of NCS will underpin all stages of our delivery.

·        a more cohesive society by mixing participants of different backgrounds;

·        a more responsible society by supporting the transition into adulthood for young people;

·        a more engaged society by enabling young people to work together to create social action projects in their local communities;

Cumbria has already been selected as a vanguard area for the development of the Coalition Government’s vision for a Big Society and the opportunity to deliver NCS alongside this, places the county at the heart of National developments.

Cumbrian businesses have been quick to support Connexions Cumbria and The Outward Bound Trust bringing NCS to Cumbria and we are thrilled with the support we have received.

Mark Bowman Chief Executive says:

This is fantastic news for Cumbria and allows us to deliver the National framework in a rural setting. The programme will be delivered in partnership with Outward Bound Trust and I am delighted that together, we can offer young people in Cumbria this unique opportunity.’
