Leaving Home

Legally a person is not allowed to leave home until they are aged 16 years. Below the age of 16 you are seen as 'juvenile' and your parents/guardian or local authority are still responsible for you.

Making a new life on your own can be very difficult and shouldn't be tackled without properly thinking it through first. Sometimes however it is not always possible to make plans because of bad relationships with your parents/guardians for instance.

It is useful to talk to someone else if you are thinking about leaving home. Personal Advisers can help you plan your next steps and give you information about organisations which can help you.

Some of the things you need to consider when you are leaving home:

Money, finances and budgeting

The laws for childcare

Types of housing available

Benefits available

Relationships
