Work Permits

If you are in compulsory education, before you start work you will need a work permit. An application form can be obtained from your school, you local Connexions centre, your local Education Welfare Officer or your employer may already have one. There are sections which need to be completed by yourself, your parents and your employer.

How long does a permit last?

A work permit lasts for as long as the job does. However, if you stop working, change jobs or your hours of work change, you will need to inform the Education Welfare Service

Could the permit be removed?

Yes, if the Local Education Authority believe that:

  • You are being unlawfully employed.
  • That your health, welfare or school attendance and education are suffering or likely to suffer as a result of your part-time job.

Remember

You need a work permit whether you are being paid to do your job or not. However, if you are doing work experience arranged by school a work permit is not needed.
