Starting Work

Moving from full-time education into employment is a huge step. There is so much to learn, names to remember, people to get to know and buildings to find your way around. If you feel unhappy and overwhelmed in the first few weeks give the job a chance before you decide if it is not for you - it is natural for it all to seem strange at first.

To help you settle in your employer should provide you with an induction programme so you gradually learn about your job and the organisation as a whole. To help you become more skilled at your work you will probably also receive ongoing training, either in the workplace or by attending courses.

If you are aged between 16 and 17, and have not yet gained a level 2 qualification (five GCSEs at grades A-C or an intermediate GNVQ or BTEC First Diploma) then you are entitled to reasonable paid time off to study either academically, through college or sixth form, or through a work based training route.
